Palma City Hall

City Hall presides over Plaza de Cort, and all the pretty streets that lead to it; next to City Hall is the palace that is home to the Consell Insular.

City Hall was built between 1649 and 1680 following the schematics of a Majorcan manor house, in a style that is a transition between Mannerism and Baroque.

The red pine cantilever with figures of caryatides and atlantians, the large balcony on the main floor and the sculptured façade with its snail and lizard carved out of stone, are all standout features of this amazing building. There is also a stone bench built onto the facade. The clock on the gable end was built in Paris and has been functioning since 1863.

Next to City Hall we find the Consell Insular de Mallorca, this building has a neo-gothic façade and was built in 1882 to home the Provincial Council. Since 1381 and until the mid 19th century the city’s prison was also located within the building.

The lobbies of both buildings are open to the public during the week, and guided tours can be arranged for students.
