Description Formentor Route:
A route of stark contrasts which runs through agricultural villages such as Sineu, Sa Pobla and Sta. Margalida, tourist areas such as Can Picafort and the beaches of Muro, protected areas such as the La Albufera natural park, to end finally at the lighthouse of Formentor, the northernmost spot on the island of Mallorca.
From Sineu, we head in the direction of María de la Salut (MA-3510) and Santa Margalida (MA-3340), where we take the MA-3400 towards Artà until crossing the Torrent de Son Real when we turn right onto the M-12, which is situated very close to Son Serra de Marina.
We continue along the M-12 until we reach Alcúdia, where we can visit the historic centre with its medieval city walls and the excavations of the Roman town, Pollentia, including a forum and a Roman theatre. A bicycle track leads us along the coast to Port de Pollença.
We then head along the MA-2210 into the peninsula of Formentor, which is lined with beautiful bays such as Cala Figuera, Cala Murta, etc.
After the obligatory stop at the Colomer viewpoint (200 m), we make our way uphill and to the right until we reach Atalaia d’Albercutx (380 m), where a 16th century tower is located. It formed part of the defensive system which protected Mallorca against pirate attacks.
The views from Pollença bay are impressive, with Menorca being visible on clear days. We descend now and continue towards the lighthouse, passing Formentor beach, where a hilly stretch begins and reaches its most challenging stretch at Fumat with slopes of 9%.
When we are back once more in Alcúdia, we head towards Sa Pobla on the MA-3433, which runs alongside La Albufera and we are able to contemplate countless fields. We leave for Llubí on the road MA-3441 and finally reach Sineu via the MA-3551.
