This is the most spread ovine race on the Balearic Islands. Historically it can be considered a race that lives in different ecosystems, in lowlands as well as in the mountains.
The white Mallorcan sheep, as well as other races, such as the Corsican, Sardinian and Sicilian sheep, is related to the sheep of the Mediterranean islands. All of them have played an important role in the commercial activities between the islands of the Mediterranean ever since.
Especially the young sheep are sold for gastronomic purposes as this meat is highly appreciated on the island because of its fine quality.
This grazing animal basically eats grass and spontaneous vegetation, such as weeds and almond leaves. However they are starting to depend more and more on sowed grass, so they can be fed directly. This allows breeders to plan production and the breeding of kids throughout the year.
