Known as Es Fir\u00f3, the holiday <strong>is celebrated on the Monday following the second Sunday in May<\/strong> and is one of the most deeply-rooted of the local calendar.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5042 size-full\" style=\"border: 0px none; margin: 10px 20px 10px 0px; float: left;\" title=\"The S\u00f3ller Moors and Christians Festival, one of the most authentic in Mallorca\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Moros-i-Cristians_2.jpg\" alt=\"The S\u00f3ller Moors and Christians Festival, one of the most authentic in Mallorca\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is religious in origin and is a playful event, but it is its theatrical element that makes it unique.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The participants, for the large part, young people from the town itself, split into two sides \u2013the Moors and the Christians\u2013, dressing up and recreating the battle which ended with a Christian victory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5047 size-full\" style=\"border: 0px none; margin: 10px 20px 10px 0px; float: left;\" title=\"The S\u00f3ller Moors and Christians Festival, one of the most authentic in Mallorca\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Moros-i-Cristians_3.jpg\" alt=\"The S\u00f3ller Moors and Christians Festival, one of the most authentic in Mallorca\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The re-enactment commemorates the battle which took place on 11th May in the year 1561, when guards of the Coll de S\u2019Illa barracks looked out and saw 23 boats with 1800 Turkish and Algerian soldiers arriving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Women played an important role in the scuffle, killing two pirates with the crossbar of a door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saracen raids were very common throughout the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries.
