{"id":4576,"date":"2009-10-20T19:20:14","date_gmt":"2009-10-20T17:20:14","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2023-09-11T12:14:13","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T10:14:13","slug":"el-palau-march-a-must-see-on-palmas-cultural-circuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/en\/culture\/el-palau-march-a-must-see-on-palmas-cultural-circuit.html","title":{"rendered":"El Palau March, a must-see on Palma\u2019s cultural circuit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Palau-March_1.jpg\" alt=\"Palau March\" class=\"wp-image-4540\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioned by Mallorcan financier Joan March Ordinas, the March Palace, located in the old town &#8212; specifically, where Conquistador Street meets the steps of the Cathedral, and with its main entrance on Palau Reial Street &#8211;, <strong>was built between 1939 and 1945.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The palace occupies the 1,500 metres squared of the former Santo Dominto Convent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the building is the headquarters of the renowned March Foundation, which comprises a museum, an auditorium, a library (which has been semi-open to the public since 1970) and a caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The museum houses permanent collection of contemporary sculpture<\/strong>, including works by Henry Moore, Chillida, Berrocal and Alfaro, among others, which Bartolom\u00e9 March Servera, the founder\u2019s youngest son, moved from the Cega Tower at Cala Rajada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the pieces exhibited is the famous 1<strong>8th century Neapolitan Nativity Scene<\/strong>, an awe-inspiring work of great beauty which shows not only the birth of Jesus, but also contemporary daily life through the many human and animal figures and rich compositional details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation\u2019s library, specialised in Balearic studies, has bibliographic and documentary resources that date back to the 16th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It houses more than 2,000 manuscripts (codices and a series of autographical documents) and 60,000 volumes of text, periodical publications, articles and other printed material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Auditorium organises a concert orchestra programme and contemporary music cycles dedicated to different composers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Admission to the concerts is free, prior reservation by phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Palau-March_4.jpg\" alt=\"El Palau March, a must-see on Palma\u2019s cultural circuit\" class=\"wp-image-4571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Palau-March_4.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Palau-March_4-300x111.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commissioned by Mallorcan financier Joan March Ordinas, the March Palace, located in the old town &#8212; specifically, where Conquistador Street meets the steps of the Cathedral, and with its main entrance on Palau Reial Street &#8211;, was built between 1939 and 1945.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4547,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-culture","et-has-post-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>El Palau March, a must-see on Palma\u2019s cultural circuit | +Mallorca<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"El Palau March, a must-see on Palma\u2019s cultural circuit.
