Its origins go back to the Middle Ages and it grew up around the site of a primitive Moorish farmstead, as is indicated by the old streets in the highest part of the village, which are narrow, winding and steep.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-4058\" style=\"margin: 10px 20px 10px 0px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_2.jpg\" alt=\"fornalutx_2\" width=\"250\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_2.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_2-237x300.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nearly all these stone streets are stepped.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The entire village is of great architectural and aesthetic interest, with buildings kept in fine condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The stone entrances, the austerity and simplicity of constructions, together with their ornamentation, mean that the houses of Fornalutx are fine examples of traditional Mallorcan mountain architecture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The village is linked to agriculture, with vegetable, orange and olive cultivation being the driving force behind the economy until the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-4063\" style=\"margin: 0px 20px 10px 0px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_3.jpg\" alt=\"fornalutx_3\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_3.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_3-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As you enter Fornalutx you will come across the Casa de la Vila (Town Hall), which includes a defence tower which dates from the 17th century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Parish Church is another of the village\u00b4s outstanding buildings; this was originally a 13th century Gothic construction, but it has undergone many renovations and its current style is more Baroque, with a single nave covered by a half-barrel-vault ceiling and lateral chapels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Popular art is in evidence in the form of <a title=\"Hand painted tiles\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mallorcashop.net\/20-hand-painted-tiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">painted tiles<\/a>. A widespread custom in the 16th century, they have a dual decorative and symbolic function: they were designed to defend the house and its inhabitants from misfortune.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Its name comes from \u201cfornal\u201d or \u201cferreria\u201d, meaning a \u201cblacksmith\u2019s forge\u201d, with the Mozarabic toponym suffix \u2018utx\u2019 added, itself a derivative of the Latin suffix \u201cucem\u201d.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-4073\" style=\"margin: 10px 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_5.jpg\" alt=\"fornalutx_5\" width=\"540\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_5.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/fornalutx_5-300x106.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fornalutx is a much-visited colourful village, in the centre of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains.
