{"id":365,"date":"2009-03-29T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-29T21:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2021-03-18T11:24:39","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T10:24:39","slug":"palma-modernist-route","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/en\/culture\/palma-modernist-route.html","title":{"rendered":"Palma or the modernist route"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-344\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/palma_o_la_ruta_del_modernismo.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"80\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"20\" \/>Modernism arose in Europe during the final decade of the nineteenth century as a reaction to the Classicism of the previous centuries.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-349 size-full\" style=\"border: 0px none; margin: 10px 20px 10px 0px; float: left;\" title=\"Palma de Mallorca or the modernist route, Casa Forteza Rey\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/palma_o_la_ruta_del_modernismo_casa_sa_forteza_rey.jpg\" alt=\"Palma de Mallorca or the modernist route, Casa Forteza Rey\" width=\"299\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">It\u00a0 prevailed across all art forms (painting, sculpture, applied arts\u2026), which sought to reassess the role of the artist in the face of the dehumanisation brought on by the industrial revolution.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Palma got its own Modernist legacy from Catalan architects. To this day, there remain worthy examples of an architecture that has been able to stand the test of time. One of the more spectacular examples is the <strong>Gran Hotel<\/strong> building, in Weyler Square. Built by the architect Lluis Dom\u00e8nech y Muntaner, it is one of Palma\u2019s first Modernist buildings.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-354 size-full\" style=\"border: 0px none; margin: 10px 0px 10px 20px; float: right;\" title=\"Palma de Mallorca or the modernist route, Gran Hotel Casasayas\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/palma_o_la_ruta_del_modernismo_casasayas_detalle.jpg\" alt=\"Palma de Mallorca or the modernist route, Gran Hotel Casasayas\" width=\"241\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/palma_o_la_ruta_del_modernismo_casasayas_detalle.jpg 241w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/palma_o_la_ruta_del_modernismo_casasayas_detalle-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/ca\/cultura\/magatzems-l-aguila-i-can-forteza-rey-dos-exemples-de-modernisme-a-palma.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Casa Forteza Rey<\/strong><\/a>, on Col\u00f3n Street, dates from 1910 and its originality can be seen not only in its fa\u00e7ade and Modernist details, ut also in the iconography of the fi gures on it: monstrous images portraying the head of a serpent dragon and a human-like face.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Can Casasayas<\/strong>, in the Market Square, is a registered <strong>Asset of Cultural Interest<\/strong>. The interior refurbishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/ca\/cultura\/la-catedral-de-palma-mallorca.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cathedral<\/a>, as egun by Gaud\u00ed, is another example of Palma\u2019s Modernism, which boasts around 40 examples in total.
