{"id":24131,"date":"2019-03-21T10:41:08","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T09:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/places-of-special-interest\/los-banos-arabes-de-palma.html"},"modified":"2019-05-09T12:20:55","modified_gmt":"2019-05-09T10:20:55","slug":"arab-baths-in-palma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/en\/culture\/arab-baths-in-palma.html","title":{"rendered":"Arab Baths in Palma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the few remaining examples of Moslem architecture still preserved on the island, the <strong>Arab Baths<\/strong> can be found in the gardens of Can Fontirroig, situated in Number 7 of the Can Serra street in Palma.<\/p>\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-2.jpg\" alt=\"Arab Baths in Palma\" class=\"wp-image-24079\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-2-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br><br>Only the central room \u2014destined to hot baths\u2014  and another adjoining room is conserved. These rooms are accessed through a portal with a <strong>horseshoe arch<\/strong>. <br><br><br>The central hall, with a square floor plan and composed of <strong>twelve columns<\/strong> and with <strong>horseshoe arches<\/strong>, is dominated by a <strong>dome<\/strong> made of bricks with five skylights for lighting purposes and steam evacuation, whose <strong>pendentives<\/strong> have only a few traces of their original decoration.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The adjoining room has a lateral corridor with a <strong>semicircular vault roof <\/strong>and is rectangular in plan.<br><br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-4.jpg\" alt=\"Arab Baths in Palma\" class=\"wp-image-24084\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-4.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-4-221x300.jpg 221w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is suspected that materials from other buildings \u2014of Byzantine or Visigothic period\u2014  were recovered and used for their construction, due to the stylistic diversity of the <strong>capitals<\/strong> of the columns.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preserved only in part, the cold baths room no longer exists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madina Mayurqa, now known as Palma, was a city refounded by the Arabs on Roman remains. From the tenth century, the Arabs made a <strong>complex hydraulic system<\/strong> for the urban center and its garden, in addition to transforming the old city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The Arab fortress known as the Almudaina was also built by the Muslims, although it was transformed into the Catalan conquest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-1.jpg\" alt=\"Arab Baths in Palma\" class=\"wp-image-24074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-1.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/banys-arabs-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More information:<\/strong> Can Serra, 7 &#8211; Palma de Mallorca.
