In Mallorca, collecting and trading snow to make ice dates right back to the<strong> 16th century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10940 size-full\" style=\"border: 0px none; margin: 10px 20px 10px 0px; float: left;\" title=\"&quot;Snow Houses&quot; before Mallorca had fridges\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/casas-de-neu-mallorca-snow-houses-mallorca.jpg\" alt=\"Snow Houses, important part of cultural and ethnological heritage in Mallorca\" width=\"350\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/casas-de-neu-mallorca-snow-houses-mallorca.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/casas-de-neu-mallorca-snow-houses-mallorca-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>On the Puig de Masanella you can still see eleven snow houses that were declared Sites of Cultural Interest back in 2004.<\/strong> The \u201csnow house\u201d includes the stone house itself where the snow collectors would seek refuge from the elements, the storage area for the snow, as well as benches, wells, <a title=\"dry stone walls\" href=\"https:\/\/www.masmallorca.es\/cultura\/la-pedra-en-sec-un-arte-desarrollado-y-perfeccionado-popularmente.html\">dry stone walls<\/a> and water fountains. Paths were built specially to get to these snow houses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The ice business was of great economical importance in Mallorca between the 17th and 19th centuries<\/strong>. Snow was collected and compacted in spring.
